The telecom industry, led by the Global System for Mobile Communications Association (GSMA) and Open Mobile Alliance (OMA), provides the following definition of oneAPI.
“OneAPI is a set of standardised, web-friendly, and lightweight application programming interfaces (APIs) for communication service providers (CSPs). By using oneAPI, CSPs can uniformly expose their networks to consumers and application developers.
The APIs are based on the RESTful application programming interface specifications and make it a unified, standards-based model for accelerated computing.
OneAPI for telecom uses the existing web technology and is complementary to the client-side and web APIs. Current releases of oneAPI include –
Includes specifications on SMS, MMS, location, and payment services. Users can send SMS and MMS to your web application. It provides security through pending user authorisation, direct charge, or first reserve funds and then charge models.
Includes information on data connection, device capability, and third-party call APIs. It helps determine the network, roaming, and bearer status of a terminal, know the make and model of a device, and manage calls through a web IVR application.
Includes the mechanism of payment interfaces for secure user consent.
Includes the development of API and specifications for anonymous customer reference. The beta version adds the customer profile and the femto-zonal presence as the new capabilities.
From the perspective of telecom service providers and developers, several benefits of oneAPI include –
The cloud and telecom spend management system (CTSMS) uses oneAPI to provide a managed services model where customers can outsource their cloud and telecom spend management. Key challenges that the CTSMS helps overcome are limited spend visibility, labour intensiveness, complex cloud pricing, vendor errors, and inventory management.
It acts as a single source of truth for the whole network with the following advantages –
